The Project
Leisure Energy is an award-winning renewable technology company, energy consultancy and principal contractor, who specialise in identifying and delivering energy & sustainability solutions through to full decarbonisation primarily to the public sector. Since 2014, they have been supporting and providing expertise to help make leisure, sport facilities and swimming pools more economically and environmentally sustainable – they were doing this when it was less cool!
- They have delivered over 400 Energy Surveys & Feasibility Reports identifying opportunities to become more economically and financially sustainable.
- They have delivered over 120 Capital Projects reducing carbon emissions by more than 30,000 tonnes of CO2a. or equivalent to taking around 56K cars off the road saving our partners £100,000’s per year.
- They have written over 70 compliant Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme applications valued at over £100M for the leisure sector.
- They have delivered as principal designer and contractor 15 decarbonisation capital projects to date, with further in the design and build stage.
- They have developed a unique, innovative and highly efficient solution (SCoP 4.64 – 4.95) for the leisure sector to make decarbonisation more affordable through our Net Zero Pod packaged plant room.
The new Net Zero Pods use energy efficient heat pump technology which will greatly reduce energy costs when compared to standard gas or electric heating. While all of Leisure Energy’s customers are keen to have the upgrade works carried out so that they can start saving energy and therefore money, they also by the nature of their business are open long hours and can’t afford to have the site shut down for long periods of time to carry out the works.
Our Approach
In order to achieve the minimum site works time, site shut down and changeover time Leisure Energy manufacture their Net Zero Pods off site, this allows a large amount of the works to be carried out with minimal disruption to the site operation.
Initially we were employed by Leisure Energy to carry out the electrical installation works the Net Zero Pods for the Biddulph leisure centre project. Following the success of this first project, we continue to work with Leisure Energy on further Net Zero Pod projects.
All works are carried out in compliance with the client’s specification and design information, however after consultation with the client, certain cable types were changed in order to rationalise the amount and types of containment, this had the effect of making the electrical installation a lot neater and less congested than it would have been.
One of our Project Managers closely manages the works with regular site visits being carried out, all site works are under the control of one of our Senior Site Managers.
The Work Included…
Installation of the following:
- Unistrut framework to mount all equipment and containment on
- A complete metal containment system consisting of galvanised trunking and conduit with the final connections to all equipment in PVC covered metal flexible conduit
- Two distribution boards for the supplies to the heat pumps and other secondary equipment
- Control panel CP1 which controls all plant and equipment within the Net Zero Pod and also links to a second site installed control panel
- Power wiring to all equipment within the Net Zero Pod
- Control and data connections to all equipment within the Net Zero Pod
- Small power and lighting within the Net Zero Pod
- Testing and off site commissioning as far possible with final testing and commissioning on site to be carried out by the site installation contractor
The installation of each Net Zero Pod takes approximately six weeks.
