What happens if there is a power cut in your building? Do you have emergency lighting? Do you regularly test your emergency lighting? If not, we can help. At Black Pear Electrical we are qualified to install, test and maintain emergency lighting, helping you to keep your building and the people inside it safe.
Emergency lighting is defined as follows by firesafe.org “Emergency lighting is lighting for an emergency situation when the main power supply is cut and any normal illumination fails.” It is further stated that: “All emergency lighting systems must be tested monthly. The test is a short functional test in accordance with BS EN 50172:2004 / BS 5266-8:2004. The period of simulated failure should be sufficient for the purpose of this test while minimising damage to the system components, e.g. lamps. During this period, all luminaires and signs shall be checked to ensure that they are present, clean and functioning correctly.”
A longer test should be carried out annually, but it is important to ensure that your emergency lighting testing is carried out as advised and a record of such kept. If you are unsure of the requirements for emergency lighting in your building, please contact us for further advice. Modern buildings are designed with emergency lighting in place in accordance with the latest building regulations, however if you are in an older building, then you may need to add additional lighting to ensure that you are compliant and are protecting the people inside your building.
Part of the function of emergency lighting is to prevent injury through panic during an emergency. Ensuring that your emergency lighting is of a good enough level will reassure people during a crisis. We can advise you lighting levels in your building if you are unsure of what levels of emergency lighting you need.
